“That Which Remains” is a side quest in Avowed that immerses players in the enigmatic remnants of the Scaedclef settlement. This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough to navigate the quest’s challenges and make informed decisions.
Initiating the Quest
- Locate the Burned House in Scaedclef: Travel east from Eagle’s Reach Party Camp to find a charred house adjacent to a cliff.
- Access the House: Climb the cliff behind the house and jump onto its roof to enter through an opening.
- Discover the Flame-Eaten Diary: Inside, examine the Aedyran Cleric’s corpse to obtain the diary, which triggers the quest.
Exploring the Laboratory
- Find the Research House Key: Proceed west to another burned structure. The front door is locked, but a breakable gate on the right side leads through a cave tunnel into the house. Destroy the gate using a Freeze-based spell or item, or unlock the front door with 3 Lockpicks. Inside, retrieve the Research House Key.
- Enter the Laboratory: Use the key to unlock the nearby laboratory. Inside, collect the Well Key from a table.
Delving into Scaedclef Grotto
- Access the Well: Outside the initial house, unlock the well using the Well Key and descend into Scaedclef Grotto.
- Navigate the Grotto: Defeat the Crystal Eaters and their spiderlings. In a chamber with purple crystals, locate a breakable wall between spider webs. Destroy it with an explosive, such as a grenade, to proceed.
Interacting with the Survivors
- Find the Survivors: Beyond the broken wall, observe caged Dreamthralls. Climb the rocks near the cages to reach a room with survivors: Fewen, Maegild, and Tobin.
- Understand Their Plight: The survivors explain their predicament, torn between mercy and survival concerning their Dreamthrall-afflicted companions.
Decision Point: Choosing a Path
- Option 1: Eliminate the Dreamthralls
- Action: Return to the cages and kill the Dreamthralls.
- Outcome: Inform the survivors, then suggest they seek refuge at Eagle’s Reach. This choice rewards you with 900 Coins.
- Option 2: Secure Provisions
- Action: Offer to obtain supplies for the survivors. Travel to Eagle’s Reach and speak with Captain Wymgar.
- Outcome: Wymgar agrees to send provisions and handle the Dreamthralls if they remain alive. This path also grants 900 Coins.
- Option 3: Attack the Survivors
- Action: Choose the [Attack] dialogue option to kill Fewen and the others.
- Outcome: This ends the quest immediately, providing only experience points.
Your decisions in “That Which Remains” significantly impact the fate of the Scaedclef survivors, reflecting the moral complexities within Avowed.
